2004 Blackwatch Report

The Weston Fury U14 boys blue team went 2-1 at the presidents Day weekend Blackwatch Tournament in Tampa, Florida. Their one loss kept them from qualifying for the championship game.

In their first game Saturday morning against Naples the WFSC U14's were able to build a 2-0 lead in the first half. The first strike had FaFa finding the back of the net from the right side, just outside the penalty area, on an unassisted goal. Diego Scheurich made it 2-0 when he was played in by Jamie Thomas. Naples was able to pull one goal back in the second half to tighten things up but the Fury was able to hang on for a 2-1 win. "It was a great first game in the tournament," Coach Julio Aviliez noted "we let them back into the game early in the second half but were able to get ourselves going again".

The second game Saturday evening matched the Fury against the Tampa Knights. Camilo Madrinan made it 1-0 when he turned and volley a 20 plus yard shot high and over the goal keepers head for the Fury. Mike Fernandez worked hard to create Madrinan's goal with some good individual defending. Sebastian Albojer then made it 2-0 off an indirect free kick just outside the penalty area as he bent a ball over the top of the wall of defenders. Tampa made it exciting in the second half by pressing the Fury into conceding a goal to make it 2-1 with about 16 minutes left in the game. "We didn't do ourselves any favors for about 10 minutes of the second half and Tampa took advantage of it", Dave Simeone WFSC Technical Director said, "in the end the boys were able to get back into the game and we were a little unlucky not to have scored a third goal as we had several good chances on counter attacks".

Sunday's schedule matched the Fury against Tallahassee United with both needing to win in order to advance to the championship game. Both teams had chances in the first half but Tallahassee United were able to score with about 22 minutes gone in the game for a 1-0 lead. The Fury were able to tie in up in a game that went back and forth in the second half off a goal by Camilo Madrinan. Virgilio Namnum provided the service for Madrinan off a bending right footed free kick. With the score 1-1 Tallahassee United started a counter attack from deep in their own end as the Fury were pressing for the go ahead goal. The long service from a Tallahassee defender split Fury central defenders Connor Burnside and Virgilio Namnum. The long bouncing service caught the two off guard and while they were able to close down the opposing striker it was too little too late. His first touch of the bouncing ball stuck a hard driven shot into the top corner of the goal past Fury goal keeper Scott Cooper to make it 2-1 with thirteen minutes left in the second half.

"This is disappointing since we certainly had our fair share of missed chances in this game. Where we were opportunistic in other games this weekend we did not make the most of our opportunities in this game" - WFSC Technical Director Dave Simeone. "It was a well taken goal by their striker but we had ample opportunity to stifle the chance or even prevent it by better organizing while the ball was in the other end of the field." Simeone concluded. "These games were competitive and ultimately helped us do some preparing for state cup in our age group. Right now we are trying to compensate for injuries and players getting healthy. From that perspective it was great to get others more opportunity to play in these games."- U14 Coach Julio Avilez. "We thought that through the course of the weekend we had some kids step up, compete and grow a bit. This group has come along especially when you consider how many of these kids are on the young side of the age group” Simeone added.
